What a crazy legislative session it was this year. PAs were on the firing line on several fronts with the possibility of a huge backslide in how we practice and what we could do. To those that stepped up and sent emails, called your representatives and senators and donated to the PAC to support our efforts we thank you and appreciate your efforts. Unfortunately there were too few of you stepping up to move most of our legislative agenda forward. We did have some strong wins. 1) The PA Compact Act passed paving the way for RI to be a Compact Licensing state along with the other states that belong to the Compact. More information on the Compact can be found here. PA Compact Info. We were also able to remove PAs from the CRNAs "Sedation Bill" which would have essentially blocked PAs as providers that could order sedation or medications like Fentanyl, Versed, Propofol or Precedex in any setting or situation. This bill took the bulk of our legislative energy and daily meetings to fight. A completely rewritten bill was passed that was a collaborative effort which protects PAs and supports everything we currently do. What didnt pass was our PA Practice Act updates which still leaves in place barriers for RI PAs to provide timely and optimal care. Again thank you to those that pitched in and hopefully those that didnt start to realize how important advocacy at the state house remains.
